Do you want to become a surgeon?

After completing your university training (medical school), you are at the the right place: The Swiss Society of Surgery is your specialist society, which will accompany you on your way to becoming a surgeon and specialize in traumatology and/or visceral surgery. The postgraduate training to become a surgeon in Switzerland takes at least 6 years. The basic training takes two years, which can be completed as part of the Core Surgical Curriculum.

Surgical Basic Exam

The written surgical basic exam is organized by the Board of Surgical Basic Exam and takes place once a year in autumn. The examination language is English since 2018. Only those who have a federal or recognized foreign medical diploma are allowed to take the surgical basic exam.

Oral specialist examination

The specialist examination consists of the written surgical basic exam and the oral specialist examination. Passing the surgical basic exam is a prerequisite for participation in the oral examination. The oral specialist examination take place twice a year in Bern.
